Cloud Flight

In Cloud Flight, the wonders of flying meet the thrill of mystery, and even the ordinary becomes extraordinary. Cloud Flight is a story about imagination- from seeing the world in a new way to seeing magic around every corner; the world is a curious and exciting place when you can fly and walk among fairies.

My inspiration for Cloud Flight came when I received a fog machine for Christmas. I set about thinking what I could invoke using the combination of a projector and a smoke screen and a few images came to my mind- clouds, mist, smoke, and beams of light. I wanted to achieve a sort of three-dimensionality with this show unlike any other- a powerful sense of immersion. To do this, I pushed the smoke out toward the audience so that the light caught on the smoke, making it feel as if fairies and beams of light were cascading out from the pizza oven to the viewer themselves. Another way in which I used the projector was by projecting images beyond the edges of the oven. Thus you can see the objects coming toward the pizza oven in the fog before they actually appear on the oven!

This video is cut in three parts so you can see everything with the fog. My fog machine is usually only able to put out fog for two thirds of the show.

Many of the videos I use here are stock I found online (the fire in the stove is mine- you can be especially thankful for that video because I put my hand in a wood stove to make it!). The stained glass windows were all made by me in GIMP using different materials I found and cut from stained glass images online.

The window scene was my first attempt at changing the material of the pizza oven itself (a technique I would use again in Firestorm Dance Party: Feel This Moment). This show was a great opportunity to experiment and I'm really excited about my results!
